Sony WH-1000XM6 Review: Still the Undisputed ANC King?

Sony’s WH-1000XM series has dominated the premium ANC headphone market for years. The XM6 adds meaningful improvements while keeping everything that made its predecessor great.

Noise Cancellation: Best in Class

The XM6 uses Sony’s QN3 HD chip — an upgrade over the QN1 — combined with eight microphones for Precise Voice Pickup and 3D noise sensing. The result is the most effective ANC we’ve tested. Airplane cabin noise, busy coffee shops, and office chatter all but disappear.

Sound Quality

The 40mm carbon fiber composite drivers deliver rich, detailed audio. The bass is present without being overpowering, mids are clear, and treble is crisp. LDAC support for Hi-Res audio over Bluetooth is a major advantage for audiophiles, and the 360 Reality Audio support creates an impressive spatial audio experience.

Comfort & Design

The XM6 features a redesigned headband with wider padding and new earcup foam that significantly reduces fatigue during long listening sessions. The touch controls on the right earcup are intuitive — swipe to adjust volume, tap to pause, hold for assistant.

Battery Life

Sony claims 40 hours with ANC off and 30 hours with ANC on. Real-world testing confirmed 28 hours with ANC active at moderate volume — exceptional for this class of headphone. A 10-minute Quick Charge provides 5 hours of playback.

Verdict

The Sony WH-1000XM6 remains the benchmark for wireless ANC headphones. If you value silence, battery life, and sound quality equally, nothing else comes close at this price point.
