Mahindra Thar OG vs Thar Roxx: Which One Should You Actually Buy?

Thar OG starts ₹10.32 lakh and Thar Roxx from ₹14.53 lakh, but only the Roxx gives you six airbags standard without upgrading to its top trim.

The Mahindra Thar OG’s cheapest AXT trim costs ₹10.32 lakh, more than ₹4 lakh under the Thar Roxx’s ₹14.53 lakh base price (Autocar India). But that AXT, and the LXT trim above it, do not get six airbags. The Thar Roxx builds six airbags into every single trim, starting with that same ₹14.53 lakh base model. If crash protection matters more to you than the cheaper sticker price, the three-door OG is not the automatic smart buy it looks like on paper.

Which One Actually Fits Your Life

These are not really rivals, they are siblings aimed at different buyers. The OG is a strict two-door-plus-tailgate, four-seat off-roader: 3,985mm long on a 2,450mm wheelbase. The Roxx stretches that wheelbase by 400mm to 2,850mm, adds two rear doors, and seats five. That extra 400mm is entirely why the Roxx exists.

The OG’s claimed 457-litre figure looks better on paper than the Roxx’s 447 litres, but that number is inherited from the outgoing three-door Thar’s brochure and no independent outlet has published a real-world usable-cargo test for the new OG yet. Treat it as a spec-sheet number, not a packing guarantee.

Where the Money Actually Goes

Both SUVs share Mahindra’s new M_Glyde 4G platform underneath, which the company says is stiffer than the old ladder frame. Where they differ is which trim unlocks which safety kit, and that is the entire story of this comparison.

VariantEx-showroom priceWhat you actually get
Thar OG AXT (1.5L diesel MT, 4×2)₹10.32 lakhNo six airbags, standard ESP and traction control only
Thar OG ZXT (diesel MT, 4×2)from ₹13.99 lakhSix airbags, all-wheel disc brakes, front parking sensors
Thar Roxx MX1 (2.2L diesel MT, 4×2)₹16.87 lakhSix airbags standard, no ADAS
Thar Roxx MX5 (diesel MT, 4×4)₹23.02 lakh4×4, six airbags, no ADAS or panoramic sunroof
Thar Roxx AX7L (diesel MT, 4×4)₹26.33 lakhLevel-2 ADAS, 360-degree camera, panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon audio

Prices are Autocar India’s current ex-showroom listing; other aggregators quote slightly different figures, so use these as a starting point for your dealer quote, not gospel.

Six Airbags: Who Actually Makes You Pay For Them

The Thar OG gates its most important safety upgrade behind a trim most buyers will be tempted to skip. The Thar Roxx does not.

Step up from the OG’s LXT to the ZXT and the price rises by roughly ₹1 lakh at the equivalent engine and drivetrain, in exchange for six airbags with a Head-Pelvis-Thorax-Shoulder layout, all-wheel disc brakes, and front parking sensors. That is the easiest lakh you will ever spend on a Thar. Skip it and you are driving a 2026 SUV with the safety kit of a decade-old hatchback.

The Roxx never makes you choose. Six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control and hill-hold are standard from the base MX1, per CarDekho’s reporting on the variant. You pay more to get in, but you are not negotiating with yourself over crash protection.

The ADAS Question: Neither Is Simple

If you specifically want adaptive cruise control or lane-keep assist, the Thar OG does not offer it at any trim or price, full stop. The Thar Roxx only fits Level-2 ADAS with a 360-degree camera on the range-topping AX7L, which starts at ₹23.14 lakh for the diesel manual and climbs to ₹28.00 lakh for the diesel automatic 4×4. Mahindra’s Mobileye-based next-generation ADAS push is reportedly aimed at 2027 models, so neither Thar gets it this year regardless of what you spend.

Claimed Mileage vs What Owners Are Actually Reporting

Thar Roxx (2.2L diesel MT)15.2 kmpl10.5 kmpl over 700km, per one owner’s report on Team-BHP

That roughly 30 percent gap is typical for a diesel 4×4 carrying its own weight on real Indian roads with the AC on. Nobody has published a comparable owner figure for the new-platform OG yet; any mileage claim for it right now is either Mahindra’s own unverified number or a guess.

Which Variant Should You Actually Buy

For the OG: buy the ZXT diesel manual, not the AXT or LXT. The airbag and brake upgrade is worth the modest premium, and unless you genuinely need the 2.2-litre engine’s extra power for towing or heavy off-roading, the base diesel keeps the price near ₹14 lakh.

For the Roxx: skip the AX7L unless you specifically want ADAS and the panoramic sunroof. The MX5 diesel manual 4×4 at ₹23.02 lakh already has six airbags, the locking differential, and genuine 4×4 capability, the actual reason to buy a Thar, without the roughly ₹3-5 lakh premium the AX7L charges for comfort features you may use twice a year.

Run the numbers on either against your own EMI comfort using the Thar Roxx EMI calculator, or check what dealers in your city are actually quoting on the Thar OG’s Mumbai on-road price page. You can also line up both SUVs side by side on the site’s Thar OG vs Thar Roxx comparison tool.

Is the Thar Roxx just a bigger Thar OG?

Mostly, yes. Both share the new M_Glyde 4G platform and similar engines, but the Roxx’s 400mm-longer wheelbase, two extra doors, and standard six airbags across its range are the real differences, not just styling.

Does the Mahindra Thar OG get ADAS?

No. As of this launch, the Thar OG does not offer ADAS at any trim. Only the Thar Roxx’s range-topping AX7L, from ₹23.14 lakh, gets Level-2 ADAS with a 360-degree camera.

Which Thar is cheaper to buy with six airbags standard?

The Thar Roxx. It has six airbags from its base MX1 trim at ₹14.53 lakh. The Thar OG only gets six airbags on its top ZXT trim, from ₹13.99 lakh, so despite its lower starting price, you need to spend close to ZXT money to match the Roxx’s standard safety kit.
