Best CNG Cars Under ₹10 Lakh in India (2026): Real Cost vs Claimed Mileage, and the One Worth Buying

The best CNG car under ₹10 lakh isn’t the one with the highest mileage claim, it is the one that doesn’t cost you half your boot.

The best CNG car under ₹10 lakh in India right now is the Maruti WagonR VXi CNG at ₹6.47 lakh, not because it has the highest claimed mileage on paper, but because it is the only one in this price band that does not force you to choose between running cost and usable boot space. Every other CNG car under ₹10 lakh trades one for the other, and the brochures never say so.

CNG has stopped being a taxi-only fuel. Maruti Suzuki, Tata and Hyundai now sell factory-fitted CNG across hatchbacks, sedans and even one SUV body style, and Maruti has just done something it never had before: put an automatic gearbox on a CNG car. But the ARAI mileage numbers on the window sticker and the real numbers at the pump are two different stories, and nobody selling you the car is going to walk you through the gap.

This is every CNG car on sale in India today priced under ₹10 lakh ex-showroom, factory-fitted only. Retrofit kits exist but void your warranty and aren’t covered here.

Maruti Alto K10 CNG₹4.82 to ₹5.32 lakh33.85 km/kg214 litres
Maruti WagonR CNG₹5.89 to ₹6.47 lakh34.05 km/kg341 litres
Maruti Celerio CNG₹6.89 lakh34.43 km/kg292 litres
Tata Tiago iCNG₹6.54 to ₹8.55 lakh26.49 km/kg (28.06 on AMT)242 litres
Tata Punch iCNG₹6.80 to ₹8.10 lakh26.9 km/kg210 litres
Maruti Swift CNGFrom ₹7.45 lakh32.85 km/kg55-litre tank in boot, no spare wheel
Maruti Dzire CNGFrom ₹8.03 lakh33.73 km/kg55-litre tank in boot, no spare wheel

The Celerio claims the best mileage on the sheet, but it is MT-only. The real split that matters is Maruti’s single-tank layout, which eats a fixed chunk of boot regardless of car size, against Tata’s twin-cylinder tanks under the boot floor, which barely touch it.

Claimed vs Real: What CNG Mileage Actually Looks Like

The Spec’d has no test fleet and has not driven any of these cars. Only the WagonR CNG has a published independent real-world test we could find, so only the WagonR gets a real-world number here. Treat every other ARAI figure in the table above as a lab claim, not a promise.

Run the actual rupee math and the savings story changes too. At Delhi’s October 2026 petrol price of ₹102.12 a litre and the WagonR’s claimed 24.35 kmpl, petrol costs you about ₹4.19 per km. At Delhi’s October 2026 CNG price of ₹86.98 a kg and Autocar India’s real 28.24 km/kg average, CNG costs about ₹3.08 per km. That is a genuine 26% saving, not the 50%-plus figure you get by comparing CNG’s lab claim against petrol’s real-world mileage, which is the comparison most CNG sales pitches actually make.

Buy a CNG car for the running cost, not the fuel bill halving you’ve been promised. The real saving is closer to a quarter than a half, and it still pays for itself inside three years on a 15,000 km annual commute.

Which Variant Is Actually Worth Buying

The Tata Tiago iCNG keeps 242 litres of boot thanks to twin cylinders mounted under the floor, not inside it.

Buy the Maruti WagonR VXi CNG at ₹6.47 lakh. The LXi CNG below it saves ₹58,000 but drops central locking and body-colour bumpers, and at this price point those are the two features you’ll miss daily, not once a year. The WagonR also carries the widest CNG-trained service network in the country, which matters more than a brochure km/kg figure when something actually goes wrong with the kit.

If boot space for a weekend trip matters more than the lowest sticker price, the Tata Tiago iCNG at ₹7.34 lakh (XT trim) is the better call: its twin-cylinder tanks sit under the boot floor instead of inside it, so you keep 242 litres against the WagonR’s larger but still tank-compromised 341 litres measured on a bigger car.

The Cars to Skip, and Why

Tata Punch in Cyantific, front three-quarter view
The Tata Punch iCNG is the only SUV-bodied car on this list, and it gives up nearly half its boot to get there.

The Tata Punch iCNG is the only SUV body style under ₹10 lakh with factory CNG, but its boot drops from 366 litres on the petrol version to 210 litres on CNG, a bigger cut than any hatchback here takes. Buy it for the raised seating and ground clearance, not the boot.

The Swift CNG and Dzire CNG are the first Maruti CNG cars to offer AMT, genuinely useful if you drive in heavy traffic and CNG’s flatter power delivery already makes clutch work tiring. The catch nobody puts on the brochure: both use a 55-litre tank bolted inside the boot instead of under the floor, and lose the spare wheel entirely to make room for it. A puncture on the highway with no stepney is a real problem, not a theoretical one.

The Alto K10 CNG is the cheapest entry at ₹4.82 lakh, but its 214-litre boot is small even on the petrol version. Buy it only if the sticker price is the deciding factor and you rarely carry more than two people’s worth of luggage.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio in Metallic Speedy Blue
The Celerio CNG claims the best mileage on paper at 34.43 km/kg, but it only comes with a manual gearbox.

Best CNG Car Under ₹10 Lakh: FAQs

Which is the best CNG car under ₹10 lakh in India?

The Maruti WagonR VXi CNG at ₹6.47 lakh, because it is the only car in this band with both a large boot (341 litres) and a wide, Maruti-trained CNG service network. If boot space under tank compromise matters more, the Tata Tiago iCNG at ₹7.34 lakh keeps 242 litres thanks to its twin-cylinder layout.

Do CNG cars really lose half their boot space?

It depends entirely on the tank design, not the fuel. Maruti’s single-tank cars lose a fixed chunk regardless of size, Tata’s twin-cylinder Tiago and Punch lose less proportionally, and the Punch’s SUV boot still drops by nearly half despite the twin-cylinder setup, from 366 litres to 210 litres.

Is CNG available with an automatic gearbox now?

Yes, for the first time. Maruti has added AMT to the Swift and Dzire CNG, and Tata already offers AMT on the Tiago and Tigor iCNG. The trade-off on the Maruti pair is losing the spare wheel entirely to fit the boot-mounted tank.
