India sold 4,39,309 passenger vehicles in August 2026, up 36.5% over August 2025, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). That number is real, and every consumer-auto outlet in the country is running it as a festive-season headline. What most of them are not telling you: the comparison month it is measured against, August 2025, was one of the weakest Augusts in years, because buyers were sitting on their hands waiting for a tax cut. Strip out that timing accident and the “boom” looks a lot more like a return to normal.

The Real Numbers Behind the Headline
SIAM’s numbers are wholesale dispatches, meaning vehicles manufacturers sent to dealers, not vehicles that drove out with a customer. That distinction matters more than usual right now, because dealers stock up ahead of Navratri and Diwali regardless of retail demand that month.
| Segment | August 2025 | August 2026 | Growth |
| Passenger vehicles | 3,21,901 units | 4,39,309 units | +36.5% |
| Two-wheelers | 18,41,954 units | 20,34,698 units | +10.5% |
| Three-wheelers | 76,324 units | 93,764 units | +22.8% |
SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon called it the highest-ever August for all three segments and pointed to “strong consumer confidence, resilient rural markets, improving financing conditions” with “festive demand also expected to provide an additional boost.” All true. None of it explains why the car number jumped more than three times as fast as the two-wheeler number.
Why August 2025 Was So Weak in the First Place
On August 15, 2025, the government announced GST 2.0, cutting the tax on most small petrol, diesel and CNG cars from 28% to 18%, effective September 22. The gap between announcement and implementation did real damage. Buyers who were ready to book in late August held off for five weeks to save anywhere from ₹40,000 to over ₹1 lakh on a mid-size hatchback or sedan, and dealers reported enquiries converting to bookings only after the rate actually changed.
That is why August 2025’s passenger-vehicle dispatch number, 3,21,901 units, was itself a depressed figure, not a normal baseline. Measuring August 2026 against it produces a growth rate that flatters the current month far more than a comparison against, say, June or July 2025 would.
Two-Wheelers Don’t Get the Same Excuse
Two-wheelers saw a milder, more believable 10.5% rise, and even that number hides a split. Scooters grew 23.8% while motorcycles grew just 2.4%. That tracks with the GST changes too: small and mid-capacity two-wheelers up to 350cc also dropped to 18% GST, while anything above 350cc was pushed up to 40%. Scooters like the TVS Jupiter and Honda Activa sit firmly in the cheaper bracket and never saw the same pre-cut buyer freeze that hit cars, because the absolute rupee savings on a ₹80,000 scooter were never large enough to make someone wait five weeks.

Three-Wheelers Are the One Genuine Growth Story
Three-wheeler dispatches, up 22.8% to 93,764 units, are not distorted by the same GST timing story since commercial three-wheelers were largely outside that rate change. This growth is closer to structural: gig-economy delivery fleets and app-based auto-rickshaw aggregation have been expanding steadily through 2026, and electric three-wheelers in particular have been the fastest-growing sub-segment for two years running. If you are looking for the one number in SIAM’s August release that reflects an actual shift in how India moves people and goods, this is it, not the car figure everyone is quoting.

A 36.5% headline from SIAM tells you dealers filled their lots for the festive season and that last August was unusually slow. It does not tell you that 1.17 lakh more Indians suddenly decided they want a new car this year.
Should You Book Now, or Wait for Diwali Discounts?
Book now if you have already picked a model and variant. Wholesale dispatches at this scale mean dealers are sitting on inventory and want to move it before the festive rush peaks around Dhanteras and Diwali, which usually brings the year’s deepest discounts on slow-moving variants but genuine waitlists on the popular ones. In the budget sedan segment, that split is visible right now between the Maruti Suzuki Dzire and the Tata Tigor.
| Model | Entry price (ex-showroom) | Top variant (ex-showroom) |
| Maruti Suzuki Dzire | ₹6.31 lakh (LXi) | ₹9.41 lakh (ZXi+) |
| Tata Tigor | ₹5.70 lakh (XM) | ₹9.10 lakh (XZ+ Lux) |
The Dzire sells in higher volumes and carries thinner discounts even in festive months, while the Tigor, sitting on older underpinnings, tends to get sharper cash discounts because dealers are clearing stock ahead of newer Tata launches. Run both through the Dzire vs Tigor comparison tool before you commit, and check your EMI on the Dzire’s EMI calculator rather than trusting a dealer’s verbal quote, since processing fees and insurance bundling routinely add ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 that doesn’t show up in the headline on-road figure.
Is SIAM’s monthly sales data the same as how many cars buyers actually drove home?
No. SIAM tracks wholesale dispatches from factory to dealer, not retail sales to customers. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations of India (FADA) tracks actual vehicle registrations separately, and its retail numbers for the same month are usually lower and less volatile than SIAM’s wholesale figures.
Why did car prices change under GST 2.0?
The GST Council cut tax on most petrol, CNG and diesel cars under 4 metres from 28% to 18% effective September 22, 2025, while pushing larger SUVs and cars beyond that threshold up to a 40% slab. That is why small-car buyers who waited out August and early September 2025 saved real money once the new rate landed.
Is festive season 2026 actually a good time to buy a car in India?
Generally yes, but not blindly. Dealers do offer their steepest cash discounts and exchange bonuses between Navratri and Diwali to hit annual targets, but that applies mainly to slower-selling variants and older generation models. High-demand variants, including automatic and top-spec trims of cars like the Dzire, often see waiting periods stretch rather than discounts appear, so book early if you want a specific configuration.
