The Tata Punch starts at ₹6.73 lakh on the road in Mumbai, the Tata Tiago at ₹5.61 lakh, a ₹1.12 lakh gap between two closely related Tata hatches built on the same 1.2-litre Revotron engine and CNG kit. Buy the Tiago if you drive mostly in the city and want the extra money in your pocket. Buy the Punch if you need the 193mm ground clearance or the bigger boot. One number should settle it faster than either of those: the Punch comes with 6 airbags standard, the Tiago with 2.

Tata Punch vs Tiago: On-Road Price in Mumbai
Every figure below is The Spec’d’s own Mumbai on-road price page for the Punch and the equivalent page for the Tiago, on-road figures that add RTO road tax, insurance and FASTag to the ex-showroom price. They are estimates: confirm the final number with your dealer before booking.
| Variant | Ex-Showroom | On-Road, Mumbai | Gearbox |
| Punch Smart Petrol MT (entry) | ₹5.75 Lakh | ₹6.73 Lakh | Manual |
| Punch Pure+ Petrol MT (Best Value) | ₹7.17 Lakh | ₹8.36 Lakh | Manual |
| Punch Smart CNG MT | ₹6.85 Lakh | ₹7.99 Lakh | Manual |
| Tiago Smart Petrol MT (entry) | ₹4.77 Lakh | ₹5.61 Lakh | Manual |
| Tiago Creative+ Petrol AMT (Best Value) | ₹7.91 Lakh | ₹9.21 Lakh | Automatic (AMT) |
| Tiago Smart CNG MT | ₹5.87 Lakh | ₹6.87 Lakh | Manual |
CNG costs almost the same premium on both: about ₹1.26 lakh more than base petrol, on-road, for either car. Going automatic costs less: about ₹67,000 to step the Punch Pure+ Petrol from manual to AMT, and ₹60,000 for the same step on the Tiago. Road tax moves the price more than either of those: the Punch runs from ₹6.32 lakh on-road in Puducherry to ₹6.98 lakh in Visakhapatnam, and the Tiago from ₹5.27 lakh to ₹5.76 lakh over the same cities, both purely a function of the state’s road tax slab.
Space: Boot, Ground Clearance and the SUV Stance
This is where the Punch earns its micro-SUV badge and the price premium that comes with it.
| Figure | Tata Punch | Tata Tiago |
| Boot space | 366 litres | 242 litres |
| Ground clearance | 193 mm | 170 mm (168 mm on iCNG) |
| Wheelbase | 2,445 mm | 2,400 mm |
| Kerb weight | 1,000 to 1,065 kg | 935 to 1,020 kg |
366 litres fits two large check-in suitcases with a soft bag on top; the Tiago’s 242 litres fits one case and a backpack before the parcel shelf starts to lift. The 23mm clearance gap matters on an unrepaired monsoon road or a steep mall ramp, where the Tiago is more likely to scrape its chin.

The Safety Gap: 6 Airbags vs 2
The Punch carries 6 airbags as standard and was rated 5 stars for adults (30.58/32) and 5 stars for children (45/49) under Bharat NCAP’s 2026 protocol. The Tiago ships with 2 airbags across every variant and was rated 4 stars for adults (12.52/17) and 3 stars for children (34.15/49) by Global NCAP, tested in 2020 under that programme’s older, less demanding rules, before Bharat NCAP existed. The two star ratings aren’t directly comparable, but the airbag count is a plain fact either way: the Tiago doesn’t offer more than 2, at any trim, while the Punch’s 6 are standard from the base Smart variant up.
If airbag count is non-negotiable for you, this comparison is already over: buy the Punch.

Claimed Mileage vs What Owners Actually Report
ARAI figures come from a lab test. Real mileage, in Indian traffic with the air-conditioning on, runs lower.
| Fuel / Gearbox | Punch Claimed (ARAI) | Tiago Claimed (ARAI) |
| Petrol, manual | 20.09 kmpl | 20 to 21 kmpl |
| Petrol, automatic (AMT) | 18.8 kmpl | Not published separately |
| CNG | 26.99 km/kg | 26 to 28 km/kg |
The Spec’d hasn’t tested either car, so treat these as reported figures, not our own. CarWale’s owner-reported data puts the Punch’s petrol manual at around 19 kmpl against its 20.09 kmpl claim. For the Tiago, CarWale’s owner reports cluster between 17 and 19 kmpl, and Spinny’s instrumented test measured roughly 13.3 km/l in the city and 16.6 km/l on the highway, well under the ARAI number. No independent instrumented test of the current Punch has been published yet.
Running cost lands close on both, per The Spec’d’s Punch mileage page and the Tiago mileage page: about ₹4,980 per 1,000 km on Punch petrol manual versus ₹4,760 to ₹5,000 on Tiago petrol, and roughly ₹2,960 per 1,000 km on Punch CNG versus ₹2,860 to ₹3,080 on Tiago CNG, both at ₹100 a litre and ₹80 a kg.

What the EMI Actually Looks Like
On 20% down and a 5-year loan at 9.5% interest, worked on the Mumbai on-road price, the Punch’s best-value Pure+ Petrol MT comes to about ₹14,046 a month; the Tiago’s best-value Creative+ Petrol AMT, a higher trim and an automatic, comes to about ₹15,472. Run your own numbers on the Punch EMI calculator or the Tiago EMI calculator.
Which Variant Is Actually Worth Buying
On the Punch, skip the base Smart and Pure trims. The Pure+ Petrol MT, at ₹7.17 lakh ex-showroom, is The Spec’d’s flagged best value: it brings the full 6-airbag kit and the SUV stance without paying for the turbo engine or the top Accomplished+ trim’s extras most buyers won’t use.
On the Tiago, the Creative+ Petrol AMT is the flagged best-value pick, at ₹7.91 lakh ex-showroom, though it alone costs more than the Punch’s own best-value pick, so cross-shop before assuming the smaller car is cheaper. On a tight budget, book the entry Smart Petrol MT at ₹5.61 lakh on-road instead of a mid-trim with features you won’t use.
See every car under ₹10 lakh if either is stretching your budget, or compare full spec sheets on The Spec’d’s Punch vs Tiago comparison tool.
Is the Tata Punch worth the extra money over the Tiago?
Yes, if you want the 6-airbag kit, the 193mm ground clearance or the bigger boot. The Punch’s entry trim costs ₹1.12 lakh more on the road in Mumbai, and that premium buys real, usable differences, not badge value.
Is 2 airbags enough on the Tata Tiago?
It meets India’s minimum legal requirement but trails the segment: rivals including the Punch offer 6 standard. The Tiago’s 4-star Global NCAP rating also comes from a 2020 test under older, less demanding rules than the Bharat NCAP test the Punch passed in 2026.
Which is cheaper to run on CNG, the Punch or the Tiago?
Close enough to call a tie. Punch CNG costs about ₹2,960 per 1,000 km at its claimed 26.99 km/kg; Tiago CNG costs ₹2,860 to ₹3,080, both worked out at ₹80 a kg.
