The Tata Tiago’s cheapest variant costs ₹5.27 Lakh on the road in Puducherry and New Delhi, and ₹5.76 Lakh in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Hyderabad: a ₹49,000 gap on the exact same car, before a single accessory. Move up to the range-topping Creative CNG AMT and the gap nearly doubles to ₹98,000, on The Spec’d’s own city price pages.
None of that is a dealer markup. It is road tax, charged as a percentage of the ex-showroom price, so the rupee gap grows as the car gets pricier. Here is where the Tiago is cheapest to register, which of its 20 variants is worth the money, and what it costs each month.
Where the Tata Tiago Is Cheapest and Costliest On the Road
Puducherry is the cheapest of the 39 cities The Spec’d prices the Tiago in, just ₹492 under New Delhi. The dearest are in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where state road tax runs between 13% and 14.3% against 4% in Delhi and Puducherry.
| City | Road tax | On-road price, Smart Petrol MT |
| Puducherry | 4% | ₹5.27 Lakh |
| New Delhi | 4% | ₹5.27 Lakh |
| Kolkata | 5.5% | ₹5.35 Lakh |
| Mumbai, Pune | 11% | ₹5.61 Lakh |
| Bengaluru | 13% | ₹5.72 Lakh |
| Hyderabad | 13% | ₹5.76 Lakh |
| Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam | 14.3% | ₹5.76 Lakh |
Figures are The Spec’d’s own on-road estimates for the base Smart Petrol MT, built from Tata’s ex-showroom price and each state’s published road-tax rules; see the breakdown for New Delhi or Mumbai. Never register a car in a city you do not live in just to save on tax.

Why Road Tax Alone Explains the ₹49,000 Gap
In Puducherry, the Smart Petrol MT comes to ₹5.27 Lakh: ₹4.77 Lakh ex-showroom, ₹19,080 road tax at 4%, ₹29,618 insurance and ₹1,200 for FASTag and accessories. In Visakhapatnam, the same car comes to ₹5.76 Lakh, because Andhra Pradesh’s 14.3% road tax alone is ₹68,210, more than three times Puducherry’s.
Hyderabad’s nominal rate is lower, at 13%, but comes to the same ₹5.76 Lakh. Telangana adds a flat ₹5,000 state levy on top of the percentage tax, closing most of the gap its headline rate suggests.
The Price Gap Nearly Doubles on the Top Variant
Because road tax is a percentage, the rupee gap grows with the car’s price. The base Smart Petrol MT costs ₹49,000 more in Visakhapatnam than in Puducherry. The range-topping Creative CNG AMT, at ₹8.62 Lakh ex-showroom, costs ₹98,000 more in the same two cities.
| Variant | Puducherry | Visakhapatnam | City gap |
| Smart Petrol MT (base) | ₹5.27 Lakh | ₹5.76 Lakh | ₹49,000 |
| Creative CNG AMT (top) | ₹9.41 Lakh | ₹10.39 Lakh | ₹98,000 |
A buyer comparing the base car across cities sees a manageable gap. A buyer comparing the top CNG automatic sees nearly a lakh of difference for exactly the same metal, which is the figure that matters if you are buying at the top of the range.
Which Tata Tiago Variant Is Actually Worth Buying
The brochure hides one odd coincidence: the Pure Petrol AMT and the Pure+ Petrol MT cost identically ₹6.1 Lakh ex-showroom. One buys a clutch-free gearbox, the other an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto, CarPlay, a reverse camera and cruise control. Most city drivers get more daily use out of the Pure+ Petrol MT.

Buy the Creative+ Petrol AMT at ₹7.90 Lakh ex-showroom if the budget stretches that far. It carries every feature the Tiago offers, including the 360-degree camera, 10.25-inch touchscreen, LED headlamps, 15-inch alloys, wireless charger and connected-car app, and adds the AMT gearbox for just ₹55,000 over the equivalent manual: the smallest step on the whole price ladder for what it unlocks. Skip the CNG versions unless you cover 1,500 km or more a month: the iCNG kit adds ₹1.03 Lakh to ₹1.1 Lakh at the same trim, recovered only through savings of roughly ₹1,900 per 1,000 km against petrol, per The Spec’d’s mileage page.
What the Tata Tiago Costs a Month in Mumbai
On the Mumbai on-road price of ₹5.61 Lakh for the base Smart Petrol MT, the EMI calculator works out an EMI from ₹9,422 a month at 20% down over 5 years, at a default 9.5% interest rate.
| Tenure | Monthly EMI |
| 3 years | ₹14,370 |
| 5 years | ₹9,422 |
| 7 years | ₹7,332 |
These are illustrative estimates on the Mumbai on-road price; your actual rate depends on your lender and credit profile.

Is the Tata Tiago Facelift Actually Safe?
The facelift adds 6 airbags as standard from the base Smart trim, up from 2 on the pre-facelift car. But the 4-star Global NCAP rating quoted everywhere for the Tiago comes from a 2020 test of that older, 2-airbag car, scoring 12.52 out of 17 for adults and 34.15 out of 49 for children under Global NCAP’s earlier, less demanding protocol. Nobody has crash-tested this facelift, so treat the 4-star figure as history, not a current rating.
The Tiago also still has no turbo-petrol or diesel option, and AMT is the only automatic on offer, with no CVT or torque-converter anywhere in the range. It still has a strong feature count for the money: see every car under ₹10 lakh with 6 airbags standard, and how it stacks up against its own Tata sibling in our Tata Punch vs Tata Tiago comparison.
What is the on-road price of the Tata Tiago?
It starts at ₹5.27 Lakh in Puducherry and New Delhi for the base Smart Petrol MT, and rises to ₹5.76 Lakh in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Hyderabad, on The Spec’d’s own city price pages. The range-topping Creative CNG AMT runs from ₹9.41 Lakh to ₹10.39 Lakh depending on the city.
Which Tata Tiago variant should I buy?
The Creative+ Petrol AMT, at ₹7.90 Lakh ex-showroom. It carries every feature the Tiago offers and adds the automatic gearbox for just ₹55,000 over the equivalent manual.
Is the CNG Tata Tiago worth the extra money?
Only if you drive a lot. The iCNG kit adds ₹1.03 Lakh to ₹1.1 Lakh over the petrol at the same trim, recovered at roughly ₹1,900 saved per 1,000 km, so it takes well over 50,000 km to earn back.
