Maruti Baleno On-Road Price: The ₹68,000 City Gap

The Maruti Baleno costs ₹6.58 lakh on the road in Puducherry and ₹7.26 lakh in Vijayawada, a ₹68,000 gap set entirely by each state’s road tax rate.

The Maruti Baleno’s on-road price starts at ₹6.58 lakh in Puducherry and climbs to ₹7.26 lakh in Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam, a ₹68,000 gap for the exact same base Sigma Petrol MT. The car does not change from city to city. The road tax does, and that single line item decides whether the Baleno feels like a ₹6.5 lakh hatchback or a ₹7.25 lakh one.

Why the Same Baleno Costs ₹68,000 More in Some States

Every state and union territory sets its own motor vehicle tax, usually a percentage of the ex-showroom price that rises in slabs. On The Spec’d’s on-road price pages for the Baleno, Puducherry and New Delhi charge just 4% road tax, the lowest of the 39 cities we price. Maharashtra charges 11% in Mumbai, Pune and Nashik; Karnataka and Telangana charge 14%; Andhra Pradesh tops out at 15.4%, which is why Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam are the costliest places to register one. None of this is negotiable at the dealership, which is why the same Sigma Petrol MT that costs ₹6.59 lakh on the road in Delhi costs ₹7.20 lakh in Bengaluru, a ₹61,000 gap for an identical car.

CityOn-Road Price (Sigma Petrol MT)Road Tax
Puducherry₹6.58 Lakh4%
New Delhi₹6.59 Lakh4%
Kolkata₹6.68 Lakh5.5%
Mumbai₹7.01 Lakh11%
Chennai₹7.15 Lakh13%
Bengaluru₹7.20 Lakh14%
Hyderabad₹7.24 Lakh14%
Vijayawada / Visakhapatnam₹7.26 Lakh15.4%

These are The Spec’d’s estimates, built from Maruti’s ex-showroom price and each state’s published road-tax rules, and they include a year of own-damage insurance plus third-party cover and FASTag. Confirm the exact figure with your dealer before booking, since insurer and RTO charges can shift by a few hundred rupees either way.

If you move states for work, a BH-series plate changes the math further. On our Mumbai price page, a BH-series Baleno pays about ₹6,768 road tax every two years, roughly ₹47,376 over 14 years, against ₹65,879 paid once on a regular Maharashtra plate. It is only for government, PSU and defence staff, or employees of multi-state companies, and only for registering where you actually live, not for shopping a cheaper plate.

Which Baleno Variant Is Actually Worth Buying

Skip the base Sigma. It is the cheapest variant at ₹5.99 lakh ex-showroom, but it comes without a touchscreen. The Delta Petrol MT is ₹1.01 lakh more and adds a 7-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, rear AC vents, steering-mounted controls, electric folding mirrors and tyre pressure monitoring, which is most of what a daily driver actually uses.

VariantEx-ShowroomOn-Road (Mumbai)What It Adds
Sigma Petrol MT₹5.99 Lakh₹7.01 LakhBase trim, no touchscreen
Delta Petrol MT (Best Value)₹6.99 Lakh₹8.16 LakhTouchscreen, Android Auto/CarPlay, rear AC vents, TPMS
Delta Petrol AMT₹7.49 Lakh₹8.74 LakhAutomatic gearbox (AMT)
Zeta Petrol MT₹7.99 Lakh₹9.31 Lakh9-inch touchscreen, LED headlamps, alloys, auto climate control, rear camera
Alpha Petrol MT₹9.10 Lakh₹10.57 Lakh360-degree camera, head-up display, ventilated seats, cruise control
Alpha (O) Petrol AMT₹9.99 Lakh₹11.59 LakhLevel 2 ADAS, the only variant that gets it

Past the Delta Petrol MT, every further step buys comfort rather than necessity: an automatic gearbox for ₹50,000, bigger alloys and a rear camera for another lakh, and finally adaptive cruise control and automatic braking on the Alpha (O), the only Baleno variant with ADAS at all, at a ₹4.58 lakh premium over the base car.

Want CNG instead? The Delta CNG MT costs ₹9.22 lakh on the road in Mumbai, about ₹82,500 to ₹92,500 more than the equivalent petrol trim, by The Spec’d’s own price breakdown, a premium that pays back fastest for anyone doing heavy city running.

What the Baleno Costs a Month

On a 20% down payment and a 5-year loan at 9.5% interest, the base Sigma Petrol MT works out to about ₹11,771 a month on its Mumbai on-road price of ₹7.01 lakh, by The Spec’d’s EMI estimate for that city. That is an estimate on standard loan terms; your actual rate depends on your bank and credit profile, so treat it as a starting point rather than a quote.

How the Baleno Stacks Up Against the i20 and Altroz

At its Mumbai starting price of ₹7.01 lakh, the Baleno is tied almost exactly with the Hyundai i20, also ₹7.01 lakh on the road, and just ₹1,000 cheaper than the Tata Altroz. The Citroen C3 undercuts all three at ₹5.86 lakh, but gives up the Baleno’s touchscreen and feature count at that price, so the sticker gap alone should not decide it. Every Baleno variant, Sigma through Alpha (O), stays under ₹10 lakh ex-showroom nationwide, keeping it inside The Spec’d’s full list of cars under ₹10 lakh alongside these same rivals.

Buy the Delta Petrol MT. It is ₹1.01 lakh over the stripped-down Sigma for a touchscreen, CarPlay and rear AC vents you will use every single day. Only pay more if you specifically want an automatic gearbox, CNG, or the Alpha (O)’s ADAS.

What is the on-road price of the Maruti Baleno?

It ranges from ₹6.58 lakh in Puducherry to ₹7.26 lakh in Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam for the base Sigma Petrol MT, a ₹68,000 spread across The Spec’d’s 39 priced cities, driven entirely by each state’s road tax rate.

Which Baleno variant should I buy?

The Delta Petrol MT, which Maruti and The Spec’d’s own pricing data both flag as the best-value pick. It adds a touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, rear AC vents and tyre pressure monitoring for ₹1.01 lakh over the base Sigma, while the Zeta and Alpha trims mostly add comfort features at a steeper price.

Why is the Baleno cheaper in Delhi and Puducherry than in Bengaluru or Hyderabad?

Delhi and Puducherry charge a flat 4% motor vehicle tax, the lowest slab among the cities we price, while Karnataka and Telangana charge 14%. The ex-showroom price and the car itself are identical; only the state tax changes, which is why the same Baleno costs ₹61,000 more on the road in Bengaluru than in Delhi.
