The Tata Sierra’s entry Smart+ Petrol MT starts at ₹13.43 lakh on the road in Mumbai, but the exact same car costs ₹12.73 lakh in Surat and ₹14.19 lakh in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada. That is a ₹1.46 lakh swing on one ex-showroom price, almost entirely down to how much your state charges in road tax.
Every version of the Sierra, petrol or diesel, carries the same ex-showroom price across India: ₹11.49 lakh for the base trim, rising to ₹21.29 lakh for the range-topping Accomplished+ Diesel AT. What moves is state road tax, insurance and registration, worked out city by city on The Spec’d’s own price pages.

Tata Sierra vs Its Rivals, On-Road in Mumbai
Line the Sierra up against the SUVs it actually gets cross-shopped with and it sits in the middle of the pack, pricier than the Hyundai Creta and Maruti Suzuki Victoris at the entry trim, but cheaper than the MG Hector.
| Model | On-Road Price, Mumbai |
| Maruti Suzuki Victoris | ₹12.28 Lakh |
| Hyundai Creta | ₹12.75 Lakh |
| Kia Seltos | ₹13.15 Lakh |
| Tata Sierra | ₹13.43 Lakh |
| MG Hector | ₹14.01 Lakh |

Which Variant Is Actually Worth Buying
Skip the Smart+ and Pure trims. On The Spec’d’s own pricing data, the Adventure+ Petrol MT, at ₹16.14 lakh ex-showroom (₹18.81 lakh on the road in Mumbai), is tagged the best-value pick. Over the Pure+ L Petrol MT one rung below, it adds a 360-degree camera, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital driver display, three terrain modes and frequency-dependent damping, all for ₹1.15 lakh more.

What it does not add is worth saying plainly: no ventilated seats, and no Level 2 ADAS. Adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking and lane-keep assist only arrive from the Accomplished Petrol MT (₹17.99 lakh ex-showroom), a ₹1.85 lakh jump over the Adventure+ Petrol MT. If most of your driving stays inside city limits, that is a lot of money for safety software you will rarely get to use in stop-start traffic. If you regularly drive highway stretches at speed, the jump is worth it.
Buy the Adventure+ Petrol MT if you mainly drive in the city. Pay the extra ₹1.85 lakh for the Accomplished only if you genuinely do enough highway driving to use adaptive cruise control.
Claimed Mileage vs What Autocar India Actually Got
| Powertrain | Claimed (ARAI) | Running Cost / 1,000 km |
| Diesel, manual | 21.26 kmpl | ₹4,230 |
| Diesel, automatic | 19.22 kmpl | ₹4,680 |
| Petrol, manual | 17.4 kmpl | ₹5,750 |
| Petrol, DCT | 16.9 kmpl | ₹5,920 |
| Turbo-petrol, automatic | 15.3 kmpl | ₹6,540 |
Autocar India’s real-world test recorded 13.05 kmpl for the diesel automatic and 10.1 kmpl for the turbo-petrol automatic, both well under the claimed lab figures above, typical for a 1.7-tonne SUV carrying city traffic and a full cabin. See the full mileage breakdown by variant.
What the Sierra Costs a Month
On The Spec’d’s Mumbai on-road price of ₹13.43 lakh for the base Smart+ Petrol MT, the EMI works out to about ₹22,563 a month, with 20% down and a 5-year loan at 9.5% interest. Stretch the same loan to 7 years and it drops to ₹17,559 a month; shorten it to 3 years and it jumps to ₹34,414. Put down 30% instead of 20% on the 5-year term and the monthly figure falls to ₹19,743.

Moving States? The BH-Series Plate Changes the Math
Anyone relocating across states for work can register the Sierra on a BH-series plate instead of a regular one. On it, the Sierra pays about ₹10,943 in road tax every two years, roughly ₹76,601 across 14 years, against ₹1.38 lakh paid once on a standard Maharashtra plate, even in a high-tax city like Mumbai. It only applies to government, PSU and defence staff, and employees of companies with offices in four or more states; never register in a state you do not actually live in to chase a lower number. Read the full BH-series breakdown by state for how the math plays out elsewhere.
