The Mahindra Thar OG starts at ₹12.28 Lakh on the road in Mumbai, but the same base AXT variant costs just ₹11.45 Lakh in Surat and ₹12.76 Lakh in Visakhapatnam, a ₹1.31 Lakh swing that has nothing to do with the dealer and everything to do with your state’s road tax slab. Buyers also have a hard deadline most city-price pages do not mention: Mahindra’s introductory pricing on the Thar OG runs out on 30 November 2026.

Mahindra Thar OG On-Road Price in Major Cities
These are on-road prices for the base AXT 1.5 Diesel MT RWD, by The Spec’d’s own city price pages, built from Mahindra’s ₹10.32 Lakh ex-showroom price and each state’s published road-tax rate. Surat is the cheapest of the 39 cities we price; Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, both on Andhra Pradesh’s 18.7 percent slab, are the dearest.
| City | Road Tax | On-Road Price (AXT) |
| Surat, Gujarat (cheapest) | 6% | ₹11.45 Lakh |
| Ahmedabad, Gujarat | 6% | ₹11.46 Lakh |
| New Delhi | 12.5% | ₹12.13 Lakh |
| Kolkata, West Bengal | 10% | ₹11.87 Lakh |
| Mumbai, Maharashtra | 14% | ₹12.28 Lakh |
| Bengaluru, Karnataka | 17% | ₹12.60 Lakh |
| Chennai, Tamil Nadu | 18% | ₹12.72 Lakh |
| Hyderabad, Telangana | 18% | ₹12.75 Lakh |
| Visakhapatnam, AP (dearest) | 18.7% | ₹12.76 Lakh |
That is a ₹1.31 Lakh gap between the cheapest and dearest of the 39 cities on the same ex-showroom price, purely down to the 6 percent Gujarat charges against the 18.7 percent Andhra Pradesh does. See the full breakdown on The Spec’d’s Thar OG price page for Surat or for Visakhapatnam. Never register the vehicle in a cheaper state than the one you actually live in; that is a paperwork and insurance headache your dealer will not sort out for you.
What the Base Variant Costs You Every Month in Mumbai
On The Spec’d’s Mumbai on-road price of ₹12.28 Lakh, with 20 percent down over a 5-year loan at 9.5 percent interest, the Thar OG EMI calculator works out to about ₹20,636 a month. Stretch the loan to 7 years and that drops to roughly ₹16,059; shorten it to 3 years and it climbs to about ₹31,475.
| Loan Tenure | Down Payment | EMI (Mumbai on-road price) |
| 3 Years | 20% | ₹31,475/mo |
| 5 Years | 20% | ₹20,636/mo |
| 7 Years | 20% | ₹16,059/mo |

Every Thar OG Variant, and Which One Is Worth Buying
The Thar OG runs 15 variants across three engines and two drivetrains. The Spec’d’s full Thar OG variant list marks the LXT 2.2 Diesel MT 4WD as the best-value pick, and the step prices back that up: it adds the real 2.2-litre mHawk diesel, four-wheel drive with a low-range transfer case and locking differentials, for ₹7.38 Lakh more on the road than the base AXT in Mumbai, well short of what the fully-loaded ZXT trims ask.
| Variant | Ex-Showroom | On-Road (Mumbai) |
| AXT 1.5 Diesel MT RWD | ₹10.32 Lakh | ₹12.28 Lakh |
| LXT 1.5 Diesel MT RWD | ₹12.99 Lakh | ₹15.42 Lakh |
| ZXT 1.5 Diesel MT RWD | ₹13.99 Lakh | ₹16.60 Lakh |
| LXT 2.0 Petrol AT RWD | ₹14.77 Lakh | ₹17.41 Lakh |
| ZXT 2.0 Petrol AT RWD | ₹16.09 Lakh | ₹18.94 Lakh |
| LXT 2.0 Petrol MT 4WD | ₹15.60 Lakh | ₹18.37 Lakh |
| LXT 2.2 Diesel MT 4WD (Best Value) | ₹16.43 Lakh | ₹19.66 Lakh |
| LXT 2.2 Diesel AT RWD | ₹16.49 Lakh | ₹19.74 Lakh |
| ZXT 2.0 Petrol MT 4WD | ₹16.60 Lakh | ₹19.53 Lakh |
| LXT 2.0 Petrol AT 4WD | ₹17.23 Lakh | ₹20.26 Lakh |
| ZXT 2.2 Diesel AT RWD | ₹17.49 Lakh | ₹20.92 Lakh |
| ZXT 2.2 Diesel MT 4WD | ₹17.49 Lakh | ₹20.92 Lakh |
| LXT 2.2 Diesel AT 4WD | ₹17.99 Lakh | ₹21.51 Lakh |
| ZXT 2.0 Petrol AT 4WD | ₹17.75 Lakh | ₹20.87 Lakh |
| ZXT 2.2 Diesel AT 4WD | ₹18.99 Lakh | ₹22.68 Lakh |
Buy the LXT 2.2 Diesel MT 4WD. The ZXT trim above it repeats the same engine and drivetrain for ₹1.06 Lakh more ex-showroom, mostly for six airbags and a bigger touchscreen; worth it if you want the extra safety kit, not worth it if you are only after the off-road hardware.
Is the Diesel 4WD Worth It Over the Petrol?
Comparing the same LXT trim and manual gearbox, the 2.2-litre diesel 4WD costs ₹83,000 more ex-showroom than the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol 4WD (₹16.43 Lakh against ₹15.60 Lakh). Mahindra has not published ARAI mileage figures for the Thar OG yet, so there is no official number to weigh that ₹83,000 against; do not trust any running-cost figure you see quoted online until Mahindra releases one.
Four-wheel drive itself is easier to price. At the same LXT 2.2 Diesel AT spec, 4WD costs ₹1.51 Lakh more ex-showroom than RWD (₹17.99 Lakh against ₹16.49 Lakh). That is the real price of the low-range transfer case and locking differentials, separate from the engine or gearbox choice.
You Have Until 30 November to Get This Price
Mahindra launched the Thar OG on 22 September 2026 at the same ₹10.32 Lakh starting price as the outgoing Thar, and deliveries began on 11 October. Business Today and Spinny both report that this is introductory pricing, valid only on deliveries booked through 30 November 2026; Mahindra has raised Thar prices three times already this year on the outgoing model, in January, April and July, so a hike once the window closes would not be a surprise. Anyone planning a Dhanteras or Diwali booking should lock the price now rather than wait.

How It Stacks Up Against Its Rivals in Mumbai
Starting on-road prices in Mumbai, by The Spec’d’s own figures: the Renault Duster undercuts it at ₹12.21 Lakh, the Maruti Suzuki Victoris matches it almost exactly at ₹12.28 Lakh, the Skoda Kushaq comes in at ₹12.44 Lakh, and the Honda Elevate is well clear at ₹13.8 Lakh. None of them match the Thar OG’s low-range 4WD and locking differentials at this price, which is the whole reason to buy one over a crossover. If you are torn between this and the longer, five-door Thar Roxx, The Spec’d’s Thar OG vs Thar Roxx comparison breaks down the practicality trade-off; for other genuine off-roaders in this price band, see every 4×4 car under ₹20 lakh.
The Thar OG is still the only sub-₹13 lakh SUV in India with real low-range 4WD and locking differentials. Buy the AXT if you want that and nothing else, the LXT 2.2 Diesel 4WD if you want it done properly, and book before 30 November either way.
What is the on-road price of the Mahindra Thar OG?

Which Thar OG variant should I buy?
The LXT 2.2 Diesel MT 4WD, at ₹19.66 Lakh on-road in Mumbai. It is the cheapest way into the real 2.2-litre diesel, four-wheel drive and locking differentials that make the Thar OG what it is, without paying ZXT money for kit you do not need off-road.
