Kia Sorento Launched at ₹27.99 Lakh: Made-in-India 7-Seater Undercuts the Fortuner

Kia’s Sorento launches at ₹27.99 lakh, locally built in Andhra Pradesh with a 442Nm diesel and hybrid AWD options, undercutting the Fortuner.

Kia launched the Sorento in India today at ₹27.99 lakh ex-showroom for the diesel base trim, and the headline number that matters more is who it undercuts: this three-row SUV is now built at Kia’s own Anantapur plant in Andhra Pradesh, not imported, which is exactly why it can start below the Toyota Fortuner while offering AWD on both its diesel and hybrid engines.

What Kia Actually Launched

This is the facelifted fourth-generation (MQ4) Sorento, sold globally since 2024, now localised for India. It sits above the Carens Clavis as Kia India’s new flagship combustion SUV, and it comes in six trims: HTE, HTE(O), HTK, HTK(A), HTX and HTX(A). The (O) suffix adds a Convenience Pack, and (A) trims bundle Kia’s Level 2 ADAS suite with the optional Black Line styling pack, priced separately at ₹20,000.

Two engines are on offer. The base HTE and HTE(O) trims are diesel-only and seven-seat-only. From HTK upward, buyers choose between diesel and a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol strong hybrid, and can pick a 6-seat captain layout instead of the 7-seat bench. AWD is standard only on the HTX and HTX(A) trims, on both engines, which is genuinely unusual in this segment.

Kia Sorento Price List: Diesel vs Hybrid

Kia hasn’t published a line-by-line price for every one of the six trims yet, but the confirmed anchor points span a wide ₹12.4 lakh range between the cheapest diesel and the loaded hybrid AWD flagship.

187-Litre Boot: What That Means With the Third Row Up

Kia quotes 187 litres with all three rows in use, expanding to 2,011 litres with the second and third rows folded flat. In real terms, 187 litres with seven seats up is tight, enough for two soft duffels or a couple of school bags, not a full set of hard-shell luggage. Fold the third row and it turns into a proper family hauler. That number is on the smaller side for a 4.81-metre SUV; the Sorento trades boot volume for a genuinely usable third row, which is the right call for a car that will spend most of its life as a 6 or 7-seater rather than a cargo van.

On mileage: Kia has not published ARAI fuel efficiency figures for the India-spec Sorento as of launch, and there is no independent real-world test published yet either. Anyone quoting a mileage number for this car right now is guessing. That will change once outlets like Team-BHP get seat time, and we’ll update this once a sourced figure exists.

Which Variant Is Actually Worth Buying

Skip the HTX(A) Black Line hybrid AWD flagship unless you genuinely drive through snow, sand or badly flooded streets every monsoon. AWD adds weight, cost and complexity most Indian buyers in this segment will use twice a year, if that. The diesel HTK(A) is the sweet spot: it carries the ADAS pack and the Black Line styling option without the AWD premium, comes with the stronger low-end torque of the diesel for highway overtakes with a full third row, and lets you choose the 6-seat captain layout if you want it. That is the trim to configure first, not the one Kia will push hardest in showroom brochures.

How It Stacks Up Against the Kodiaq, Tayron and Fortuner

The Sorento’s real competitive set is the Skoda Kodiaq, the Volkswagen Tayron and the Toyota Fortuner, all of which sit in or near this price band. Against the Kodiaq specifically, the Sorento’s diesel torque figure and AWD-on-diesel option are real differentiators; you can run the numbers on the Sorento vs Kodiaq comparison tool once you’ve picked a trim. Against the Fortuner, the Sorento undercuts the base diesel by a meaningful margin while offering more standard safety kit, but Toyota’s service network and resale value in India remain deeper for now, first-year Sorento buyers are the ones taking that risk on.

The Catches

Three things to weigh before booking. One, no ARAI mileage or independent range data exists yet, so budgeting fuel cost on this car right now means guessing. Two, AWD is locked to the two most expensive trims on each engine, so if all-wheel drive is the reason you want this car, you are also buying the rest of the flagship equipment list whether you want it or not. Three, this is a first-year locally-built model from a brand whose India dealer network is still younger and thinner than Toyota’s for a body-on-frame-adjacent flagship SUV, worth asking your local dealer about service turnaround before you sign.

The Sorento’s real pitch isn’t the spec sheet, it’s the price: a locally-built, AWD-capable 7-seater diesel that starts under ₹28 lakh didn’t exist from Kia in India before today.

Check the Kia Sorento’s price and EMI details, use the EMI calculator to plan a down payment, or look up the on-road price in Delhi before you book.

Is the Kia Sorento cheaper than the Toyota Fortuner?

Yes, at ₹27.99 lakh ex-showroom the base diesel Sorento undercuts the Fortuner’s entry diesel price, while adding more standard safety kit. Toyota still has the longer India track record and resale value on its side.

Does the Kia Sorento come with all-wheel drive on the diesel engine?

Yes, but only on the top HTX and HTX(A) trims. Lower diesel trims, including the ₹27.99 lakh base HTE, are front-wheel drive only.

What is the Kia Sorento’s ARAI mileage?

Kia has not published an official ARAI fuel efficiency figure for the India-spec Sorento as of its September 4, 2026 launch, and no independent real-world test has been published yet either.
