Tata Nexon On-Road Price: The ₹84,000 City Gap

The Nexon starts at ₹8.62 lakh on-road in Mumbai, and the cheapest of 39 cities is ₹84,000 less. Here's the variant, city and real mileage that matter most.

The Tata Nexon starts at ₹8.62 Lakh on the road in Mumbai for the base Smart Petrol MT, but that number moves by as much as ₹84,000 depending on which of The Spec’d’s 39 priced cities you register it in. The variant that actually earns its extra money is the Smart+ S, not the automatic and not the diesel.

Tata Nexon On-Road Price in Mumbai, Variant by Variant

On The Spec’d’s Mumbai price page, the Smart Petrol MT comes to ₹8.62 Lakh on-road: ₹7.4 Lakh ex-showroom, ₹81,399 for Maharashtra’s 11 percent road tax, ₹39,789 for insurance, and ₹1,200 for FASTag and accessories. These are estimates, not a dealer’s final invoice, built off Tata’s own ex-showroom price list for all 44 versions.

The ₹84,000 Gap Between the Cheapest and Priciest City

Puducherry is the cheapest of the 39 cities The Spec’d prices the Nexon in, at ₹8.1 Lakh on-road on a 4 percent road tax. Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada sit at the other end at ₹8.94 Lakh, pushed up by Andhra Pradesh’s 15.4 percent tax, which is a ₹84,000 swing on the identical Smart Petrol MT. Mumbai, at ₹8.62 Lakh, lands closer to the cheap end than the expensive one.

CityOn-Road PriceRoad Tax
Puducherry (lowest)₹8.1 Lakh4%
New Delhi₹8.33 Lakh7%
Mumbai₹8.62 Lakh11%
Bengaluru₹8.86 Lakh14%
Visakhapatnam / Vijayawada (highest)₹8.94 Lakh15.4%

Buyers eligible for a BH-series plate, government and PSU staff, defence personnel, and employees of companies with offices in four or more states, pay Nexon road tax every two years instead of once: about ₹8,362 a cycle, or roughly ₹58,534 over 14 years, against ₹81,399 upfront on a regular Maharashtra plate. It is worth asking your employer if you qualify before you register.

Which Variant Is Actually Worth Buying

The jump from Smart+ Petrol MT to Smart+ S Petrol MT costs just ₹30,000 and adds a sunroof, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers and roof rails, the single best-value step in the range.

Buy the Smart+ S Petrol MT. Skip the AMT unless you specifically want an automatic, it adds ₹70,000 for convenience alone. Skip the diesel too unless you are covering serious highway distance: at The Spec’d’s own running-cost estimates, diesel saves about ₹1,860 for every 1,000 km over petrol manual, so the ₹1.05 Lakh diesel premium only pays for itself after roughly 56,000 km, about four to five years of average Indian driving.

Claimed Mileage vs What Team-BHP Owners Actually Get

Tata claims up to 24.08 kmpl for the Diesel AMT, from the standard lab test. Owner-reported figures collated on Team-BHP’s Nexon ownership page put real-world numbers well short of that once traffic and air-conditioning enter the picture.

Engine & GearboxARAI ClaimedTeam-BHP Real-World CityTeam-BHP Real-World Highway
Diesel MT23.23 kmpl~17 km/l~22 km/l
Diesel AMT24.08 kmpl~15 km/l~18 km/l
Petrol MT17.44 kmpl~13 km/l~16 km/l
Petrol AMT17.18 kmpl~16 km/l~22 km/l
CNG24 km/kg~16 km/kg~21 km/kg

The diesel manual drops by roughly a quarter in city traffic, normal for any diesel in stop-start Indian driving, but it stays the most efficient engine in the range by a wide margin over petrol.

What Each Fuel Actually Costs to Run

On The Spec’d’s mileage page, worked out against the claimed figures at ₹100 a litre of petrol, ₹90 a litre of diesel and ₹80 a kg of CNG, Diesel AMT costs about ₹3,740 for every 1,000 km, CNG about ₹3,330, Diesel MT about ₹3,870, and Petrol MT about ₹5,730. The 44-litre tank takes the Diesel AMT up to roughly 1,050 km on a full fill, less in city traffic.

EMI on the Nexon in Mumbai

On The Spec’d’s EMI calculator, built on the Mumbai on-road price of ₹8.62 Lakh, the Smart Petrol MT works out to about ₹14,489 a month with 20 percent down over five years at 9.5 percent interest, the site’s default assumptions. That is an estimate for comparison, not a loan offer; your bank’s actual rate will differ with your credit profile.

How the Nexon Stacks Up

The Nexon is one of the few compact SUVs in this price band sold with both a factory CNG kit and a proper diesel, a gap we covered when we compared it against the Hyundai Venue, which has neither. For a variant-matched comparison with on-road prices and EMI on both, The Spec’d’s comparison tool lines them up side by side. It also carries India’s first 5-star Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP rating for a locally made car, and 208mm of ground clearance, segment-leading for a compact SUV. The trade-off: diesel is manual or AMT only, no torque-converter or DCT option, and cabin plastics trail some newer rivals at the top end. See every compact SUV on sale in India for the wider field.
