If you have walked into a two-wheeler showroom this month and found it busier than usual, you are not imagining it. India just sold more scooters and motorcycles in a single month than ever before, and for the first time, electric two-wheelers are no longer a rounding error in that number. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), the body that tracks actual vehicle registrations at RTOs across the country, released its July 2026 retail data, and it tells a story every commuter and every EV-curious buyer should care about.
The headline number: 18.18 lakh two-wheelers in one month
Two-wheeler retail sales hit 18,18,289 units in July 2026, the segment’s best-ever July and the first time it has ever crossed the 18 lakh mark in that month. That is a 28.25% jump over the 14,17,767 units sold in July 2025. In plain terms: nearly one in three more scooters and bikes went home to buyers this July compared to last year.

Who is actually winning your money
Honda held on to the top spot with 4,69,687 units, up 28.54% year-on-year, good for roughly a quarter of the whole market. Hero MotoCorp followed with 4,40,662 units (up 26.85%), and TVS Motor came in third with 3,74,113 units, but posted the fastest growth of the top three brands at 33.45%. Bajaj Auto and Suzuki rounded out the top five.
| Brand | July 2026 units | YoY growth |
| Honda | 4,69,687 | 28.54% |
| Hero MotoCorp | 4,40,662 | 26.85% |
| TVS Motor | 3,74,113 | 33.45% |
| Bajaj Auto | 1,80,183 | 22.85% |
| Suzuki | 1,02,668 | 9.24% |
The real story: EVs just crossed 11% of the market
Electric two-wheelers crossed 2 lakh monthly units for the first time ever, with 2,04,362 units retailed, up a massive 88.32% over the 1,08,516 units sold in July 2025. That pushed EV penetration, the share of all two-wheelers sold that run on a battery instead of petrol, to a record 11.24%, up from 10.59% in June and just 7.65% a year ago. If you have been on the fence about an electric scooter because you were not sure the ecosystem was ready, this is the number that says it is getting there fast.
TVS is now the country’s largest electric two-wheeler maker by volume, retailing 55,499 EV units in July, up 135.24% year-on-year. You can check the full specs and on-road price of the TVS iQube here if that is the scooter behind those numbers. Bajaj Auto is close behind in the EV race with 45,613 units, up 121.89%.

Here is the twist: Ola Electric, the brand that arguably kicked off India’s electric scooter boom, sold just 14,106 units in July, down 23.54% year-on-year, even as the overall EV segment exploded around it. While TVS and Bajaj are pulling further ahead, the company that once dominated this space is now losing ground.
The market is not just growing, it is being redrawn. Legacy two-wheeler giants are turning their electric sub-brands into genuine volume sellers, and that is squeezing the pure-EV pioneers who got there first.
What this means if you are buying this festive season
More competition between Honda, Hero, TVS, and Bajaj on both petrol and electric two-wheelers is good news for your wallet. Expect sharper festive-season discounts, faster dealer stock turnover, and more EV variants at lower price points as brands chase this growth. If range anxiety was your worry, an 11.24% EV penetration rate means charging infrastructure and service networks are being built out faster than they were a year ago, because dealers now have the volumes to justify it. For city commuters weighing an EMI on a petrol scooter against one on an electric, this is the month the math started tilting harder toward electric.
