Mahindra XUV 7XO: Buy the AX5 Diesel AT, Skip the AX7L

Mahindra’s XUV 7XO spans 27 variants from ₹13.99 lakh to ₹25.79 lakh ex-showroom. The AX5 Diesel AT is the one worth booking, and the AX7L isn’t.

The Mahindra XUV 7XO is sold in 27 variant, fuel and transmission combinations, from ₹13.99 lakh to ₹25.79 lakh ex-showroom. Buy the AX5 Diesel AT at ₹19.79 lakh. It is the cheapest way to get the diesel automatic with the panoramic sunroof and comfort kit most buyers actually want, before the price climbs steeply for features that matter far less. Skip the AX7L trims at the top: they add premium trim over a variant that already has every safety feature that counts.

Why the XUV 7XO Needs a Buying Guide at All

Mahindra’s own variant list for the XUV 7XO runs to 27 lines once you count both engines, both gearboxes, six and seven seat layouts, and front- versus all-wheel drive. Outlets that have tried to rank the lineup end up hedging: pick the base AX for value, the AX5 or AX7T for a mix of kit and price, or the AX7L if money is no object. That is not an answer. Here is one.

Which Variant Is Actually Worth Buying

The AX5 Diesel AT is The Spec’d’s catalogued best-value pick for a reason: at ₹19.79 lakh ex-showroom, it is the first diesel automatic in the range that also gets the panoramic sunroof and front parking sensors. Step down to the AX3 Diesel AT and you save ₹1.5 lakh but lose the sunroof. Step up past it and the price climbs in bigger jumps than the extra kit is worth for most buyers.

There is one genuine trade-off worth knowing before you book. The AX7 Diesel MT costs ₹19.6 lakh, just ₹19,000 less than the AX5 Diesel AT, and adds dual-zone climate control, a 540-degree camera, a power driver seat and 18-inch alloys that the AX5 Diesel AT does not get. What it does not have is the automatic gearbox.

If you drive mostly in city traffic, the AX5’s automatic is worth more than that extra kit. If you mostly drive open roads and would rather row your own gears, the AX7 Diesel MT is the better ₹19,000 cheaper buy.

The AX5 Diesel AT on-road in Mumbai comes to about ₹23.63 lakh, according to The Spec’d’s Mumbai on-road price page, and works out to roughly ₹39,695 a month with 20 percent down over a 5-year loan at 9.5 percent interest. That is The Spec’d’s own estimate, built from the ex-showroom price plus Maharashtra’s RTO road tax, insurance and FASTag, not a dealer quote, so confirm the final number before you book.

What You Give Up Skipping the AX7L

The AX7T Diesel AT, at ₹23.09 lakh ex-showroom, already has everything that affects safety and daily usability: Level 2 ADAS with autonomous emergency braking and lane keep assist, 7 airbags, ventilated front seats, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon system with Dolby Atmos.

Move up to the AX7L and you pay ₹1.9 lakh more for 19-inch wheels, ventilated rear seats, a rear wireless charger and ambient lighting, none of which changes how safe or how comfortable the front two seats are. The AX7L Diesel AWD AT at the very top adds all-wheel drive for another ₹80,000, worth it only if you regularly drive on loose or wet surfaces.

On-Road Price: The ₹1.77 Lakh Gap Between Cities

The starting AX Petrol MT comes to about ₹16.51 lakh on the road in Mumbai, against an ex-showroom price of ₹13.99 lakh, once Maharashtra’s 12 percent road tax, insurance and FASTag are added in. Surat is the cheapest of the 39 cities The Spec’d prices, at ₹15.66 lakh on-road. Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam are the most expensive, both at ₹17.43 lakh, a ₹1.77 lakh gap driven almost entirely by each state’s road tax slab rather than anything Mahindra charges.

CityOn-Road Price (AX Petrol MT)Road Tax
Surat (cheapest)₹15.66 Lakh6%
Mumbai₹16.51 Lakh12%
New Delhi₹16.23 Lakh10%
Bengaluru₹17.22 Lakh17%
Vijayawada / Visakhapatnam (dearest)₹17.43 Lakh18.7%

Safety Rating and the Boot Space Catch

Bharat NCAP rated the XUV 7XO 5 stars for adult occupants, scoring 30.76 out of 32, and 5 stars for child occupants at 44.97 out of 49, in its 2026 testing. That is a genuinely strong result on India’s own crash test programme. Mahindra claims up to 13 kmpl on the ARAI cycle for the lineup; no independent real-world mileage test has been published yet, so treat that figure as a lab number rather than what you will see in city traffic.

One number is missing where you would expect it. Mahindra has not officially published the XUV 7XO’s boot volume. Outlets, and The Spec’d’s own catalogue, carry 240 litres with all three rows up, a figure inherited from the outgoing XUV700’s spec sheet rather than separately confirmed for the 7XO.

Treat it as a close estimate, not a certified number, and that is a genuinely tight boot for a car this size if you are planning a seven-up road trip with luggage.

The AX5 Diesel AT is the version to walk into a Mahindra showroom asking for by name. Everything below it skips the automatic gearbox; everything above the AX7T is spending real money on wheels and ambient lighting, not safety.

How It Stacks Up Against the Tata Safari

The XUV 7XO’s closest rival on price is the Tata Safari, which starts about ₹87,000 cheaper on the road in Mumbai at ₹15.64 lakh. Buyers cross-shopping the segment should also look at every 7-seater SUV on sale in India before booking, since the MG Hector and Hyundai Alcazar both sit within a few thousand rupees of the XUV 7XO’s starting price in the same city.

Which is the best value variant of the Mahindra XUV 7XO?

The AX5 Diesel AT, at ₹19.79 lakh ex-showroom. It is the cheapest variant with both the diesel automatic gearbox and the panoramic sunroof, before the price jumps for features most buyers will use rarely.

Is the AX7T worth the extra money over the AX5 Diesel AT?

Only if you specifically want Level 2 ADAS, ventilated front seats or the Harman Kardon sound system, since the AX7T is the first variant that has them, for ₹3.3 lakh more. For everyone else, the AX5 Diesel AT covers the essentials.

What is the on-road price of the Mahindra XUV 7XO in Mumbai?

The base AX Petrol MT comes to about ₹16.51 lakh on-road in Mumbai, and the AX5 Diesel AT comes to about ₹23.63 lakh, on The Spec’d’s own city price estimates.
