Mercedes-Benz Warns It Will Close a German Assembly Plant and Engine Factory Unless Costs Come Down

Why it stands out
- 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with 48V mild-hybrid assist makes 557 PS (550 bhp) and 770 Nm, enough for a claimed 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds despite a 2,825 kg kerb weight.
- Dedicated Mercedes-Maybach cabin seats 5 with an 11.6-inch rear entertainment touchscreen, powered-recline rear seat backrests and a Burmester 3D surround sound system.
- Independent double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension both run on air springs with adjustable ride height, riding on 22-inch wheels.
- Extensive standard driver-assist and comfort kit: adaptive cruise control, 360-degree camera, blind spot monitoring, panoramic sunroof and wireless phone charging.
- Shares its 3,135 mm wheelbase with the standard Mercedes-Benz GLS, so the more formal Maybach front and rear treatment still leaves a 520-litre boot.
Worth knowing
- Ex-showroom price of Rs 2.75 crore in Delhi is roughly double the standard GLS 450's starting price, and the cosmetic Night Series (about Rs 3.23 crore) and Celebration Edition (about Rs 4.10 crore) special editions cost more still.
- ARAI-claimed mileage is just 8.5 kmpl; the user-reported average is 11 kmpl.
- Not yet tested by any NCAP crash-test body, so there is no independent crash-safety star rating available.
